Top 10 Perfume Secrets From Reddit

In a world where every Instagram reel is a sponsored post and every content creator is trying to sell you something with the claim of ‘Best Fragrance Perfume for Men’, there’s still one place that you can rely on for real and honest information.

That’s right. Reddit will always be there to your rescue.

There’s something for everything on Reddit and, just like everyone else, we also couldn’t help but enter a deep, very deep tunnel of what fragrance fanatics have to say about their top perfume secrets.

Here’s a curated list of the best (and most interesting) confessions we found.

1. If a perfume is too good, people will literally gatekeep it

There are so many Redditors who have openly admitted that they don’t want to tell others the name of the Fragrance they are wearing because it’s too good to be shared.

Talk about being an obsessive lover.

However, we would like to mention that there is another part of Reddit that has admitted to doing the opposite. Because the more people buy their favourite perfume, the lower the chances are that it’ll get discontinued.

2. There are MANY ways to test a perfume

When we began our research, the one thing we were bombarded with the most was how to test a perfume.

Most people suggest simply putting it on their wrist and checking it.

Some say the perfect test is putting it on both their skin and clothes because perfumes behave differently on warm skin, oily skin, dry fabric, skin with products on it, and of course, sweaty clothes.

Many people are completely against those sample strips you get at shops, while some suggest wearing a perfume, stepping out of the shop to see how it smells after a few minutes of walking around, and then coming back to purchase it.

3. The name matters. A LOT.

Many Redditors have now concluded that the name of the perfume plays an important role in whether they will buy it or not.

Perfumes with tongue twisters and difficult-to-pronounce names often get rejected just because people won’t know what to say when asked, ‘What are you wearing?’

They prefer fragrances with catchy and easy-to-pronounce names that feel premium without making you work for it.

4. There’s an IMDb for perfumes!!

That’s right, there are many websites where you can maintain perfume logs, reviews, wear counts, wishlists, and recommendations. The most loved one being Fragrantica.

Yup, that’s how deep someone’s love for perfume can go sometimes.

5. Reddit prefers travel-size over giant 150 ml bottles

Many experienced collectors are now regretting purchasing those massive bottles because the deal was great.

Apart from running out of shelf space, getting big bottles also meant committing to the same Fragrance for a long time. And the one thing we know to be true about us human beings is that we get tired very easily.

The advice across the board is to invest in smaller travel-size perfumes. This helps you keep multiple options for different occasions, and it does not take up shelf space that you anyway don’t have.

Of course, if you are a one-perfume kind of person who will stick by the same fragrance for all their life, go for the bigger bottles. They are made for you.

6. Sniffing your elbow to reset nose fatigue???

Yup, this was suggested.

In the deep corners of Reddit, we found a user telling us that when you test too many fragrances, the nose starts shutting down. Everything merges into one.

Most people think smelling coffee beans can fix that.

But this one Redditor suggests smelling their inner elbow or clean skin. It helps recalibrate the olfactory baseline faster.

Basically, instead of giving your nose another shocking aroma, give it a neutral smell that it’s familiar with.

Have we tested it out personally? No.

Should you be testing it out? Sure, if you’re curious.

7. Don’t spray too close to your nose

This particular Reddit user said something interesting.

They wrote about the time they sprayed their new perfume on their chest. And in 30 minutes they couldn’t smell it anymore. So they sprayed again, only for others around them to start complaining about the strong smell in the room.

This taught them that constant scent exposure directly under your nose will lead to nose blindness. You stop noticing the perfume after some time and just assume, ‘I need to reapply.’

That’s why many people recommend spraying the perfume on the back of their neck, shoulders, forearms, and clothes.

8. There’s something you can do about that perfume you hate

Fragrance Reddit clearly hates things going to waste because they even had an answer for what to do when you hate a perfume.

Simply use it when doing laundry.

People admitted to adding a little bit of the fragrance they did not like to their laundry load before switching on the washing machine.

The logic was simple. A perfume that might feel too much on skin might smell lighter and cleaner when diffused lightly through fabric.

9. Fragranceheads are secretly judging you

This confession appeared more times than we’d care to admit. People who love and notice perfumes also notice the person wearing them.

Apparently, each note now comes with a designated personality trait.

Citrus office scent? Probably an organised person.

Heavy on the Oud? Bold and someone who likes to stand out.

Subtle yet noticeable vanilla? They know how to grab attention silently.

10. Bathroom is not the right place for your perfume

Many Redditors observed that placing their perfume in the same place where they take hot, steamy showers ended up degrading the perfume oils.

The heat, steam, humidity, and repeated temperature changes are literally cooking your perfume, which in turn impacts the quality of the scent over time.

Now that you know of these secrets hidden in the deep pages of Reddit, how many would you say actually surprised you? And how many are making you want to buy a perfume right now?
